Who’s Afraid of the Light? by Anna McGregor
Crafted on black paper, the book immerses readers in the depths of the ocean floor, creating an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. The illustrations are intentionally limited because well, if you were submerged in the bottom of the ocean, you wouldn’t be able to see. As you continue reading, the suspense grows.
The Mystery of Fergus
The author/illustrator uses a unique technique to gradually ‘illuminate’ the character, prompting readers to engage in a delightful guessing game. Piecing together the small information that Fergus (the main character) provides and the illustrator’s interpretation of these clues allows the reader to guess what animal Fergus is. Providing more clues over time for more informed guesses.
Easy to Read Book
This book will easily become family favorite because of its clever writing style. The narrator JUST wants to know what type of animal Fergus is. But Fergus is NOT having it! This book is excellent for younger kids because they will instantly be drawn in by the humor of Fergus. Older kids can use clues Fergus provides to guess what type of animal Fergus could be. Parents will love this book because it’s easy to reread and is still (mostly) humorous the 27th time you read it.
Learning While Reading?
From an educational standpoint, this book is worth the read. The reader can learn about the ocean life present in the Bathypelagic zone. The last pages provide illustrations and facts about the different animals that live in the ocean depths. This book perfectly introduces part of the marine life that is often overlooked and would lead to great discussion and more learning about the different ocean zones and animal and plant life.
All in All: One of the Best Books for Kids
This book would be a great addition to your bookshelf. The writing style is playful, and the illustration choice makes it stand out. This book allows readers to reflect on the universal theme of curiosity. With its blend of visual allure and clever storytelling, this book is poised to become a cherished family favorite.
Fergus is a lovely name for a kids’ book character! Look forward to reading it.
